Kabonge Coffee and Tree Nursery Profile
About Kenya Kabonge Coffee and Tree Nursery
Kabonge Coffee and Tree Nursery is a registered and certified provider of high-quality coffee seedlings, recognized by the County Government of Kirinyaga and certified by the Coffee Directorate under the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO). It is also acknowledged by the Coffee Research Institute (formerly Coffee Research Foundation) for its commitment to excellence in coffee seedling production.
In Kenya, there is a high demand for premium coffee seedlings, but the supply often falls short. Kabonge Coffee and Tree Nursery aims to bridge this gap by empowering farmers through the provision of certified, high-quality coffee seedlings. These seedlings are vital in enhancing farmers' capacity, increasing productivity, and ultimately improving livelihoods. In addition to coffee seedlings, we also supply tree and fruit seedlings for nature conservation and to support climate resilience.
Coffee Varieties
Our nursery specializes in raising certified Coffea arabicaseedlings, offering a wide variety of strains, including Ruiru 11, Batian, SL28, SL34, and K7, as well as Ruiru 11 grafted onto SL28 and SL34 rootstocks
Ruiru 11 is a high-yield, disease-resistant variety ideal for various altitudes, resistant to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease. When grafted onto SL28 or SL34 rootstocks, it gains improved drought tolerance and enhanced cup quality.
SL28 thrives at altitudes of 1,500–2,100 meters in moderate rainfall regions, producing exceptional cup quality but is more susceptible to disease.
SL34 excels in high-altitude areas with high rainfall, yielding high-quality beans but shares similar disease vulnerabilities.
K7 performs well in medium to high altitudes, offering moderate yields with some resistance to diseases, though its cup quality is slightly lower than that of SL28 and SL34.
Quality Assurance
To ensure the highest quality, we use certified propagation materials, including seeds and vegetative materials (such as scions), sourced directly from the Coffee Research Institute, Ruiru. Additionally, we are supported by the institute in establishing certified clonal gardens, further enhancing the quality and consistency of our seedlings.
Our dedication to quality has earned us positive feedback and numerous referrals from satisfied clients. At Kabonge Coffee and Tree Nursery, we are not just cultivating coffee—we are nurturing nature and fostering prosperity.
